San Juan province to build solar panel factory with Schmid Group

The governor and other representatives of Argentina's San Juan province have met with German solar company Schmid Group to discuss plans for a solar panel factory in the area, the provincial government reported.
The local government wants to develop a factory that would produce between 70MW and 100MW of panels annually. Leaders are also considering the construction of an adjacent research center to develop new technologies for the factory. Total investment in the project is still unknown.
Schmid would provide the initial technology and train local engineers to operate the plant. Final details of the contract are still under discussion.
The factory will likely be located in 9 de Julio department due to transport connections, access to intermediate goods and proximity to a 132kV power line.
San Juan ministers indicated that a contract with Schmid would be signed by end-2012 or early 2013 and the start of construction would immediately follow.
